Exact data on when it was built weren’t preserved. However, it is clear that this is the first house with high ceilings in Mostar. Such a feature marked the architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the arrival of Austria-Hungary in 1878. This leads to the conclusion that the house was built much earlier (perhaps in the 17th or 18th century) and that it was thoroughly renovated after the arrival of Austria-Hungary. No significant changes on the house have been made since. Hospitality Bosniaks are strongly regarded by their fabulous traditions. Local people in Bosnia and Herzegovina will almost always be very friendly. This is common to the region of the Balkans but Bosnian hospitality is something special. Bosnian inhabitants are a much more caring culture and will go out of their way to assist you in finding something and often invite someone to their home for a coffee. It is considered rude to refuse an offer of a drink or a meal when visiting someone in their home. Once you enter someone's home as guest, expect the red carpet treatment. More than likely the host will bring out sweets when one of rules comes out - it is bad if you are in rush, so do not rush ;-) Bosnian culture still maintains extended family groups, which means that the grandparents live with their adult children or close by and care for the children while the parents are at work. All children are raised with values respecting their older and knowing that they will most likely care for older relatives later on. Hospitality is a very important value and leads to a deepened social exchange between friends and neighbours. The Sefić familly is the one of the most prominent families in Mostar. The first written evidence about the Sefićs dates back to 1792. At that time, the Sefić family were well known diplomats in foreign countries. Thus, the last name Sefić is derived from the arabic word safir (Turkish sefir) meaning ambassador. Several generations of this family were also well known imams in Ćejvan Ćehaja mosque in Mostar and two of them, imam haji Salih and imam haji Omer, were prominent hafizu-l-Quran. Ćejvan Ćehaja mosque is the second oldest Islamic building in Mostar, built in 1552 (Hijri: 960). One interesting detail about this mosque is that the minaret was built at the left side unlike any other mosque in Bosnia and because of that it became also known as the „Inat“ mosque (the mosque of spite). This waqf (Islamic endowment) served several purposes for family members of the Sefićs from 1839 to 1941. This mosque was, therefore, called the ‘Sefić mosque’. The Ćejvan Ćehaja maktab was erected by his mosque before 1554. Cejvan Cehaja ordered that two dirham be spent daily on fruits, or, if this was not available, on different candies which would be handed out to children each Thursday afternoon. This maktab was, therefore, called ‘sećer mejtef’ (sugar maktab) by locals. Up to three hundred girls and four hundred boys used to receive their education in this maktab every year. It, also, became the subject of several lyrical poems which, each in its own way, described events in the maktab and around it. One such poem famously sang about the love between imam Omer and young Umihana. IMAM HAJI HAFIZ SALIH SEFIĆ was born in Mostar in 1853. It was in Mostar where he accomplished maktab (primary school in islamic subjects), hifz and madrasah. After graduation from madrasah, hafiz Sefić was imam and muallim (teacher) at Ćejvan-Ćehaja mosque and maktab, until his death. This mosque and maktab, while active, were known by the names Sefić’s mosque and Sefić’s maktab. Hafiz imam Salih was a distinguished muallim, teaching numerous generations providing religious education to them. He played an important role in the political life of Mostar during the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878, rejecting the rule of Austria. Hafiz Salih Sefić died on June 24, 1926. He was buried in the cemetery of the Šarić mosque. IMAM HAFIZ OMER SEFIĆ was born in Mostar in 1895. He accomplished his education in maktab and ruždija (elementary Islamic school) in Mostar. Imam Sefić accomplished his hifz under mentor, and father, imam haji Salih Sefić. He never entered taught religious subjects; hafiz Sefić was a journalist. In 1945, he migrated to Trieste where he died in year 1974. It was noted that the last hafiz from the Sefić family used to give vineyards in the neighborhood of Balinovac in Mostar to a man famous for his beautiful handwriting to make a written copy of the Holy Quran. This process lasted for two years. IMAM ALI SEFIĆ – Imam in Ćejvan Ćehaja’s mosque from 1926 and teacher in maktab from 1900 IMAM ARIF SEFIĆ – one of the imams in Baba-Bashir’s mosque at Balinovac, Mostar, at the beginning of the 20th century. EMINA SEFIĆ (Koluder upon marriage) was born in 1884 and died in 1976. „Emina“ is a Bosnian sevdalinka (traditional folk poem) written by Mostar poet Aleksa Šantić. It was named after Emina Sefić and became one of the most well-known sevdalinkas of all time. The sound you can hear in the background is a melody from this beautiful sevdalinka. SEFIĆ MEHMED-MEHA (1919 – 1988) was a famous Mostar and B&H painter. He was famous for his paintings of the Old Bridge. Painting experts thought of him as a distinguished portraitist. He studied art in Belgrade and Zagreb. AHMET SEFIĆ – fervent anti-fascist and national hero NAZIF SEFIĆ – one of the most famous divers. Cuisine is an important segment of the cultural heritage of Mostar and Bosnia and Herzegovina in general. Alongside arhitecture, literature, folklore, weaving and generally the way of life, we can without any doubt also include Bosnian dishes. Because the culinary art of the medieval Bosnian kingdom was confined to the noblemen's castles, we can say that the year 1462 marks the birth of traditional cuisine in Bosnia. That was the year when the first aščinica, a restaurant for the townspeople, was opened. The first written recipes and menues in Bosnia are contained in the documents compiled by Isa Beg-Ishaković in the second half of the 15th century, and later in a volume compiled by Gazi Husrev-Beg in 1531. Today, Bosnian cuisine counts more than 400 different dishes which will content the most demanding gourmets. Bosnian cuisine was extolled by ancient story tellers, and travellers such as Evliya Chelebi, for even in the distant past it was a thing to be remembered with pleasure. Bosnian recipes have been recorded in old documents, manuscripts and even in folk songs. All the food in Bosnia is prepared slowly and it is enjoyed in the same manner, in good company and chatting. What makes Bosnian food even better is the overwhelming sense of hospitality and warmth. Traditional Bosnian cuisine is consistent with modern demands of medicine and healthy food. One important part of life for every Bosniak is Bosnian coffee which is a reflection of Bosnian gourmet mentality. In the traditional Bosnian house, you will usually be served Bosnian coffee and rahat lokum or šerbet. Bosnian coffee comes in a small metal pot called džezva coupled with a small round cup called findžan. The preparation of coffee starts by roasting and grinding then finely ground coffee is put in a džezva and topped with boiling water. Džezva is then placed on a hot plate, coffee is stirred and brought to boil to the top of the džezva, making fine foam. When the top turns a cream colour you are ready to pour. A few drops of cold water are added to help the sediment drop. The bottom of the džezva has to be wider and become narrower towards the top. Coffee has to stand for a while and then you just have to pour the coffee into findžans and serve on specially forged trays with rose or walnut rahat-lokum and a glass of cold spring water. Of course, the džezva is usually filled with extra cup of coffee.
